Chinese Letters and StencilsOriental art is often accented with Chinese letters. Here are some ideas of how you can use stencils to create art with an Asian flair!Asian art is hard to describe because it can take on so many different forms. It can be as simple as the single stroke circle of Zen Art or as intricate as the many different styles of carving on furniture. 
These prints were easily created with
Oriental Stencils
which are available in a book below. They seem to be painted on an ancient rice paper but that is not true. They were painted on a thick sheet of plain white stock with layers of paint. The first layer was a very light color such as almond painted with solid coverage and allowed to thoroughly dry. The next layer was darker like a tan and laid on very thick. Before it could dry a comb was brushed through the paint in vertical and then horizontal stripes. Then the stencils were painted on when all paint was dry.As most Chinese art the images are accented with a vertical line of Chinese letters each representing a separate sentiment like harmony or friendship.
