Christmas Art Activities and Stenciling an Ornament
Don’t you just love this time of year? I can’t wait to get some Christmas art activities started. You know the decorations and gifts. Here’s a great one to customize your tree (or give as a gift).
I can’t say it enough. The real beauty of stencils is that they allow you to put hand painted images in difficult places so that you can custom design your own arts and crafts. This Christmas Art Activities Project proves this point very well because it involves painting on glass. You know how slippery glass is and paint doesn't want to stick to it. Well, I want to show you how easy it is to custom design Christmas Ornaments with stencils!
Well, here's the how to in words but don't miss the video below!
I started with those inexpensive clear glass globes that you can find in boxes at the craft supply store or maybe even the dollar store. I poured acrylic craft paint into them by drizzling it around the opening and then rolling the globe until the inside was covered with color. Here you have the opportunity to create ornaments any color you want. You can stick to the traditional red or green of most Christmas Projects but you can also use Magenta or Cyan or Fluorescent Yellow. It’s up to you so be different!
Then I printed the Poinsettia Stencil from
Free Printable Christmas Stencils
and prepared it for painting on my ornament. Hint: you’ll have to reduce the size to a very small Poinsettia to fit on the ornament. For more tips on preparing a paper stencil for long term use go to
Long Term Stencil Making
Ideas.
I held the stencil onto the globe and with the stippling technique I layered on a coat of red acrylic paint. For this step you just want to get a coat of paint because when it dries you'll have a good outline that will allow paint to adhere better than on glass. To remove the stencil without smudging the paint, hold the globe at the bottom with the hand you have used to apply paint and lightly pinch up the stencil and pull straight up.
After the paint dries, use a thin artist’s brush to paint over the petals using two or more reds and pinks to create depth, shadows and highlights.
OK – That’s it in words but wouldn’t it be great to see it in action? No problem! I put together this video so that you can watch me as I do this. It is very easy; however, reading the instructions, doesn’t make it seem easy. But watch me as I step you though the process and you’ll be creating before you know what happened.
So now you made some ornaments and you’re looking for your next Christmas Art Activities Project. Well, do you like the festive napkins that line the bowl that the ornaments are piled in the picture above? I have all details for doing this at
