Oriental Stencils!
Oriental Stencils and designs offer a clean and peaceful mood to any environment.
I found this old trunk at a flea market for $6.00. It had so much character that needed to be rediscovered. After cleaning it up and giving it a base coat with black spray paint, I added on the stencils (see the book of Oriental Stencils below).
The three cranes on the top are all in one stencil but they can be used individually so that the spacing can be adjusted. A clean bamboo stencil on the front inspired me to paint the rounded accent pieces on the corners like bamboo.I reduced the size of several of the stencils of
Chinese Letters
from the book and painted them in a vertical row on the left side. This is one of the many advantages of working with paper stencils that come from either a book or the free stencils that can print from this site. Before you cut out the openings, take your stencils to a copy machine and enlarge or reduce the size. Of course, if you have image software like Photoshop you can use that to make your stencil the perfect size for the project.

I love to create
Stencil Art Prints
with Oriental Stencils. They create such peaceful scenes. These prints were painted on a thick paper that doesn’t have any texture to it. I know now you are wondering how I can say that when clearly this paper has shadowy lines running through it that indicate it must be a rice paper or something of the sort. Actually...No! I made those lines myself and this is how. I covered each sheet with a cream or light tan base coat and let that dry thoroughly. Then I covered the paper again with a darker tan or light brown and working quickly ran a comb horizontally and vertically to draw lines in the paint. Let that dry thoroughly and just add stencils! By the way, you can use a regular comb or you can actually find a tool made for this at your local arts and crafts supply store.

Here is another way to create framed art with Oriental Stencils. The above prints are very calming almost Spa-like with their earth tones. But these feature the use of very vibrant colors. One of the best parts of creating your own stencil art is that you can choose whatever colors you want. You can use colors from the current decor or you can just reach right into your imagination and pull out whatever pleases you (and then maybe you’ll end up changing everything else in the room). The oriental stencils above were just screaming out for bold colors and I caved in. Of course, it wasn’t a stretch because I like being bold with colors. However, the point is that since you are creating your own art, be yourself. Have a good time!
Oriental Stencils are so popular now they are great for decorating our clothes. This was an old pair of jeans hanging in my closet that were just like any other pair of jeans. But not anymore. I can’t tell you how many people stop me to talk about these unique jeans. For more on this project and to follow along step by step on how it was done, check out
Dragon Stencil
. Another suggestion that I like to make about working with paper stencils is for you to cover the front of the paper with a clear protective coat like clear shelf liner before you cut. This way you can wipe the stencil down with a damp cloth after each use. This keeps your stencil ready for many, many painting.
Here is another painted furniture project that I really wanted to share with you. Again, I started with black because I think it’s a good back drop for really making these stencils pop. The
Koi Stencils
